تتوانایی گیاهان در خنثی نمودن آثار تنش شوری (کلرید سدیم) به مقدار زیادی به وضعیت درونی K+ وNa+ بستگی دارد. در واقع حفظ نسبت بالایK+/Na+ در سیتوسل از عناصر اصلی تحمل به شوری است. برنج به­عنوان یکی از مهم‌ترین غلات و غذای اصلی یک‌سوم از جمعیت جهان ،گیاهی حساس به شوری است، شوری بیش ‌از حد به‌طور مضری همه فعالیت‌های متابولیک اصلی برنج را تحت تأثیر قرار می‌دهد. تحقیق حاضر در دانشگاه کشاورزی ساری در سال 1394 انجام گرفته است. بذر گیاه برنج (ارقام IR29، سنگ طارم و جلودار) پس از ضدعفونی به‌منظور جوانه‌زنی در ژرمیناتور قرار گرفتند. پس از 14 روز از آغاز کشت، تیمار شوری 120 میلی­مولار نمک کلرید سدیم اعمال شد. نمونه‌برداری به‌صورت Time-course در 6 زمان (6،0، 24، 120،72، 168 ساعت) پس از اعمال تنش از بافت‌های برگ و ریشه انجام شد. نتایج آزمایشات فیزیولوژیک نشان داد که اثرات ژنوتیپ، زمان نمونه‌گیری و اثر متقابل روی تمامی صفات اندازه‌گیری شده شامل میزان مالون‌دی‌آلدئید (MDA)، کلروفیل a، کلروفیل b، کاروتنوئید و پرولین در سطح احتمال ۱ درصد معنی‌دار بود، غلظت کلروفیل a،b و کارتنوئید موجود در برگ در ساعات اولیه تنش کاهش یافت و در ادامه با افزایش ساعات تنش، ضخیم شدن برگ ها و افزایش نسبت کلروفیل در واحد سطح برگ (لوله­ای شدن برگ) میزان کلروفیل افزایش ‌یافت. بررسی میزان مالون دی‌آلدهید در برگ نشان داد بیشترین افزایش در رقم حساس (IR29) وجود داشته است. آنالیز نتایج میزان پرولین نشان داد ارقام حساس و متحمل در شرایط عادی (بدون تنش) اختلاف معنی‌داری نداشتند اما با قرار گرفتن در شرایط تنش میزان پرولین در رقم متحمل بیشتر از رقم حساس افزایش‌یافته است. میزان پرولین در ژنوتیپ سنگ طارم به‌عنوان یک ژنوتیپ متحمل به شوری در زمان‌های (72، 168،120 ساعت) نسبت به شاهد افزایش معنی‌داری نشان داد. بنابراین واکنش ارقام حساس و متحمل برنج نسبت به تنش شوری متفاوت از یکدیگر است و با اندازه‌گیری پارامترهایی همچون مالون‌دی‌آلدهید، کلروفیل a، کلروفیل b، کاروتنوئید و پرولین می‌تواند به اصلاح این گیاه در جهت تحمل به شوری کمک شایانی نماید.
