فاکتورهای محیطی متعددی بر رشد و نمو و در نهایت تولید محصول در گیاهان تاثیر می­ گذارند. شوری از طریق عدم تعادل مواد معدنی (سمّیت عناصر یا کمبود آن‌ها)، تنش اسمزی و تنش اکسیداتیو تولید محصول را تحت تأثیر قرار می­ دهد. در این مطالعه با به کار‌گیری تکنولوژی PCR در زمان واقعی تغییرات سطوح ژن­های SOS2، MYB-related و HD-ZIP در شرایط مختلف تنش شوری (2، 5، 8، 11 و 14 دسی زیمنس بر متر) در دو لاین مختلف آفتابگردان روغنی (AS5305 و 9CSA3) بررسی شد. نمونه‌برداری از برگ‌های گیاهان در مرحله 8 برگی در چهار زمان 6، 12، 24 و 48 ساعت پس از اعمال تنش شوری انجام شد. این ژن­ها تحت تنش­ های غیرزیستی در انتقال سیگنال (SOS2) و به عنوان عوامل نسخه­ برداری (MYB-related و HD-ZIP) درگیر هستند. طبق نتایج حاصل، الگوی بیان هر سه ژن مورد بررسی در لاین­های مورد مطالعه در پاسخ به تنش شوری متفاوت بود. مقایسه میزان بیان ژن­ها در دو لاین نشان می­دهد که در حالات مختلف مورد بررسی عمده افزایشِ بیان در لاین AS5305 اتفاق افتاده است؛ در جاییکه افزایش بیان در لاین 9CSA3 دیده می­ شود در مقامِ مقایسه در آنجا میزانِ افزایشِ بیان در لاین 9CSA3 (لاین حساس) کمتر از لاین AS5305 (لاین متحمل) می­ باشد. نتایج نشان‌دهنده‌ی نقش مثبت این ژن­ها در مکانیسم مقاومت آفتابگردان به تنش شوری می‌باشد. از طرف دیگر در این مطالعه با تأیید مقاومت لاین AS5305 به تنش شوری در سطح مولکولی، می‌توان بالقوه از لاین مذکور در تولید ارقام هیبرید مقاوم به شوری در اصلاح نبات استفاده نمود.
