شناسایی مقایسهای روابط بین عملکرد و اجزای عملکرد گیاهان در شرایط تنش و نرمال، اصلاحگران را در تدوین استراتژی یاری می‌رساند. کنجد گیاهی روغنی با محتوی روغن بالا و کیفیت مناسب می‌باشد. در این بررسی تاثیر کم آبی بر مولفه‌های عملکردی 15 ژنوتیپ چند شاخه کنجد از کلکسیون بخش تحقیقات دانه‌های روغنی مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. رگرسیون عملکرد دانه بر اساس صفات مختلف فنولوژیک و اجزای عملکرد گویای اثر معنی دار مثبت طول شاخه فرعی زاینده و تعداد دانه در کپسول در شرایط نرمال و فقط طول شاخه فرعی زاینده در شرایط کم آبی بود. تجزیه عاملی مقایسه ای بین شرایط نرمال و شرایط کم آبی حاکی از تغییر اولویت‌بندی گیاه کنجد از جهت تخصیص مواد فتوسنتزی به اندام‌ها و مخازن مختلف در شرایط تنش بود. با این حال، رجحان اول گیاه در هر دو شرایط نرمال و کمبود آب اختصاص مواد فتوسنتزی به شاخه‌های فرعی بود. در شرایط کم آبی، گیاه اصلی‌ترین و قوی‌ترین سیستم کنترل مرکزی خود را بر تعداد شاخه فرعی بیشتر معطوف نمود، اما با بهره‌گیری از دو سیستم کنترل دیگر که اثرات به مراتب کمتری داشتند، بر افزایش وزن دانه به عنوان شاخصی از بقا و تمدید نسل آتی متمرکز گردید. تمرکز بر ارتباطات رفتاری و بیولوژیک گیاهان و روابط بین اجزای آنها از یک سو و تغییر نگرش از دیدگاه بیومتریک به دیدگاه -بیومتریک -فیزیولوژیک، کارآیی اصلاح برای شرایط نامساعد نظر تنش‌ها را افزایش می‌دهد.
